Laser sailing champ secures gold No. 6

SAILOR Colin Cheng hauled in gold No.6 for Singapore at the Asian Games in Doha yesterday.

In doing so, the Laser 4.7 champion helped Team Singapore reach their target of a six to eight gold haul, even though the three sailing wins will be credited only after the final races.

The Republic's other three golds have come from bowlers Valerie Teo and Michelle Kwang (women's doubles), bodybuilder Simon Chua (lightweight) and swimmer Tao Li (50m butterfly).

Yesterday, Cheng, 17, finished third and first in races 10 and 11.

With only one race left to go for the eight-boat fleet, he has an insurmountable lead of 22 points.

Qatar's second-placed Waleed Al Sharshani, who had a first and a fourth yesterday, has 31 points.

Points are calculated by adding up the finishing position for each race, with the worst finish discarded.

Even if the Qatari wins today's final race and Cheng is last, there is no stopping the Singaporean from claiming the title, for the Anglo-Chinese School International Baccalaureate student would still have fewer points - 30 compared to 32 - than his rival.

On Sunday, fellow sailors Sarah Tan and Lim Tze Ting, and Justin Liu and Sherman Cheng, secured the 420 girls' and boys' titles respectively with two races to go.

And, if all goes well, the Republic can expect gold No. 7 today.

Laser sailor Maximilian Soh won race 11 yesterday to lead the 11-boat fleet with 20 points.

Japan's second-placed Yoichi Iijima, who was fourth, has 28 points.

The 18-year-old Singaporean needs only to finish no worse than ninth in today's final race to win the gold.
