SINGAPORE’S sailors remain on course to meet their target of four gold medals at the 24th SEA Games here in Pattaya, Thailand.
They lead in four classes in the sailing competition, which resumes today on the waters off the Ocean Marina Yacht Club at Pattaya after a rest day yesterday.
Leading their respective classes are JustinLiu and Sherman Cheng (International 420 boys), Dawn Liu and Elizabeth Tan (International 470 women’s), Rachel Lee (Optimist girls’) and Lo Jun Hao (Super Mod).
Singapore are also second in the Hobie 16 ,International 420 girls’, International 470 men’s, Laser, Laser Radial and Optimist boys’. Twelve races are scheduled for each class, and between five to eight races have been completed in the respective classes.
Team manager Andrew Sanders remains cautious about the medal chances of Singapore, who won seven gold and three silvers at the last SEA Games in 2005 in the Philippines.
“It’s still early to talk about medals,” said Sanders, who is also chief executive officer of SingaporeSailing, yesterday.
“Conditions over the past few days have been very tricky, with predominantly light winds suddenly dying down.
“It’s like a lottery out there.
“There isn’t one race where the points’ margin is very wide. All the teams are still very close to each other, and with the tricky conditions, just a single bad day is enough to turn the tide against us.”
