Toh Liying, 23, and Deborah Ong, 17, have been nominated to the Singapore National Olympic Council to represent Singapore in the 470 women event at the 2008 Olympic Sailing Competition.
SingaporeSailing has accepted the Unused Quota Position in the Women’s Two Person Dinghy event (Women’s 470 Class) from the International Sailing Federation. This is the first time Singapore’s sailors have received an Unused Quota Position for the Olympic Games.
There are two 470 women pairs in SingaporeSailing’s Olympic squad, i.e. Toh Liying / Deborah Ong and Dawn Liu / Elizabeth Tan who are eligible for the position. SingaporeSailing’s policy is to conduct nomination events if possible. Due to the short time frame before the Olympic Games and lack of suitable competitions, it is logistically impossible to conduct any nomination events. In this light, SingaporeSailing’s selection panel has reviewed the results of competitions over the last 12 months and the current world rankings of the two pairs. The selection panel has nominated Liying and Deborah based on their better performances over the last 12 months and higher ISAF world ranking (the latest world ranking as of 28 May 2008).
Liying and Deborah will commence training immediately in Singapore. They have been keeping up with their fitness regime and their immediate aim would be to get to optimum weight and strength required for the conditions in Qingdao.
