 NSC Optimist Sailing Scheme (NSC-OSS)

The National Sailing Centre Optimist Sailing Scheme (NSC-OSS) is develop to assist the young sailors from learning the basics of sailing, to the point of purchasing their own boats and participating in regattas and competitions.

 Objective
  • To formulate a step-by-step guide for all interested young sailors to enjoy and fully develop their potentials in sailing the Optimist
  • To assign the young sailors to training classes which measures up to their individual sailing abilities
  • To maintain and monitor the sailing history of all young sailors of the centre
Target Group
  • Children from ages 8 - 15 years old
The Optimist Certification Pathway
  • The Optimist Certification Pathway is a four-level stystem to get you started in the exciting sport of Optimist sailing. Each level builds on the previous level(s), teaching sailing skills and knowledge, and safety and environmental awareness.
Structure
OptiJunior
This course is designed to introduce the sport of Optimist sailing to young novices in a fun and engaging manner. The goal is to build confidence through development of skills and awareness of the sailing environment.


OptiSailor
The focus of this course is to get students to be competent sailors in the Optimist boat. Sailors who have completed this level will have the basic skills to participate in normal Optimist sailing activities under proper supervision.


OptiRacer
This course aims to train Optimist sailors to sail safely under minimum supervision and be able to participate in sailing regattas in a competent manner.


OptiStar
OptiStar sailors will acquire advanced skills which would equip them to sail effectively in the Optimist under more demanding sailing conditions. Thye will also attain a superior knowledge of racing rules. This programme paves the way for sailors to get into the National Squad, where they will represent Singapore at regional and international competitions.

Note:
1. After completing the OptiJunior course, the participants has the option to proceed further to OptiSailor or opt for Recreational Sailing at the centre for a duration of three (3) months only
2. Participants have the option to progress to each subsequent level of the scheme, after having  met the necessary requirements. Sailing at the centre will cease once the participant opt NOT to progress as requred.
