Overall wingfoil winner Chew Ker Wan is inspired by the eight junior sailors, all under the age of 14, competing toe-to-toe with adults like himself.
The 51-year-old said, “Seeing so many kids racing has been immensely motivating for us adults. Training with my daughter, Victoria, has not only made me a better sailor, but also pushed me to dig deeper inside as these kids are fast, fearless, and they're truly our future.”
Besides the races, the NE Monsoon GP series also features a GPS Speed Challenge, where competitors submit speed records from their GPS watches for comparison.
Guillaume Pichoir won the challenge by posting a new personal best of 31.57 knots.
GPS Speed Challenge for Wingfoil
1st Guillaume Pichoir – 31.57 knots
2nd Jun Hao Lo – 29.52
3rd Malo Pichoir – 25.27
4th Ker Wan Chew – 24.38
5th Jean-Marc Provost – 23.48
6th Victoria Chew – 23.08
7th Mason Lau – 21.84
The 51-year-old wingfoiler attributed his win to riding the right gear, refining his technique incrementally, as well as reading the wind and taking advantage of the conditions.
“I’ve recorded every session on my watch over five years, continuously improving my maximum velocity. By analysing each tweak, I steadily improved,” shared Guillaume.
Series 3 was postponed by a week due to poor wind conditions and moved from Changi Beach to Constant Wind for greater flexibility with race courses.
